Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) are more than just “mood swings” before your period. These conditions can bring significant physical, emotional, and psychological challenges that impact daily life.

In my video, I explain what PMS and PMDD are, how they differ, and what you can do to manage the symptoms. Here’s a brief summary:

What Are PMS and PMDD?

  • PMS: Involves symptoms like bloating, cramps, breast tenderness, fatigue, irritability, and mood swings that occur a few days before your period and disappear once it starts.

  • PMDD: A more severe form of PMS, affecting 3-8% of menstruating individuals. Symptoms include intense irritability, depression, hopelessness, concentration issues, and sleep disturbances. PMDD significantly disrupts daily life and requires clinical attention.

Why Do PMS and PMDD Happen?

Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle, particularly changes in estrogen, progesterone, and serotonin levels, are the main triggers. Stress, poor diet, and lack of exercise can worsen symptoms.

How to Manage PMS and PMDD

  1. Diet: Reduce caffeine, sugar, and salty foods. Increase magnesium- and vitamin-rich foods like leafy greens and nuts.

  2. Exercise: Regular physical activity can alleviate both physical and emotional symptoms.

  3. Stress Management: Techniques like mindfulness, yoga, and breathing exercises can help you feel more balanced.

  4. Professional Support: If symptoms of PMDD are severe, consult a healthcare provider for possible treatment options, including therapy or medication.
